The printer man
John Tore Gundersen , situated in Mo i Rana Norway, is currently using the Epson 7900 large format printer with Epson UltraChrome™ K3 ink with Vivid Magenta technology and Brilliance Chromata White™ canvas. The printer can produce prints that are 60cm wide and 12m at the longest when using roll media such as canvas. He allso uses a Canon imagePROGRAF iPF8100 which deliver world class prints as wide as 120cm. He is very maticulous when it comes to profiling in his workflow and calibrates his equipment at least once a week to assure premium quality each time a picture is printed. If you choose canvas as media he will stretch the canvas over a blind frame so that the finished product looks and feels like a painting. He also coats the canvas after print with Glamour II Veneer from Breathing Color. |

Workflow
The first step is to optimize the image for printing, this is my area of expertice, and I deliver the file ready to be printed, but John Tore checks the file and profiles it before printing. The next step is loading media into the printer. In most cases the media is canvas on roll. When the printer is ready the file is sent to print. When the print is done it will be checked for inperfections both by John Tore and yours truly. If the print passes scrutiny the next step is the varnishing of the print. Finally, after the picture has dried it is wrapped in silk paker and bubble plastic and is ready for shipping. |

What is Fine Art Printing
There are several different definitions of fine art ptintin and the joury is still out on the subject. In my case the definition is as follows. Fine art printing is the process of getting an image from camera to canvas with the highest possible quality in mind utilising the best technology available. When I say the highest quality possible I also mean that there shall be the highest amout of truth in the print. The print should look like the image I shot as it is displayed to me on screen wile editing. This means that the calibration of the equipment mus be uniform and profiles must be and is created for the specific image. When I say the best technology I'm not only talking about the printer, but also the media, for example canvs, the inks and the varnish. All these components must be state of the art, pardon the pun, to ensure the level of quality I expect from my prints. |
